This page describes how to control access to content that you contribute via the GeoChronos portal.
The GeoChronos Platform provides a convenient mechanisms for controlling access to any content contributed by users of the system (blogs, files, scientific data, applications, etc.). Here are some of how you might use these access controls examples:
- You could create a private blog that only you can see.
- You could create an event and share it publicly with all users of the system.
- You could start an Interactive Application Service session and share it with members of a specific group.
- You could upload a file and share it with a specific set of contacts that you define in a contact list.
Every time you contribute content to the system you will be presented with a form that allows you to select the access control you wish to apply to that particular content. Here is an example:

- Selecting Private will restrict access of the contributed content to just yourself. In other words, you are the only one who will be able to see what you have written or uploaded.
- Selecting Public will allow anyone to view the content, including users who are not logged into or members of the GeoChronos portal.
- Selecting Logged in users will allow anyone to view the content, provided they are logged in to the GeoChronos portal.
- For each group that you are a member of, you will see Group: group_name, selecting this access control will restrict content access to users who are members of the specified group.
- For each contact list you have created, you will see contact_list_name appear in the list, selecting this access control will restrict content access to users who are members of the specified contact list.
Additional notes:
- The content owner is free to update the access control setting over time, usually by choosing to edit the corresponding content (blog, file, bookmark, event, etc.)
- WARNING: Although a group's membership may be designated as private (i.e., controlled by the group owner), any content contributed to that group must still have it's access control set to Group: group_name, in order to guarantee it will only be accessible to members of the group. For example, when a group forum topic is added, care must be taken to ensure that the access control is set to Group: group_name, if the intention is to restrict access to that forum topic, to members of that group.
